即使…也

jíshǐ…yě

Set a stone in the road and the step goes over it

The picture A large stone laid right in the path, and the foot stepping over it to carry on in the original direction. 即使…也 keeps going anyway; 如果…就 changes course when the condition turns up.

Connectors

Where the picture shows up in 即使…也

  1. Downpour, same departure time

jíshǐ xià dà yǔ, wǒmen yě yào ànshí chūfā

Even in heavy rain, we leave on time.

a raincoat pulled on in a downpour and someone climbing into the van right on the hour

  2. You don't say it, it shows

jíshǐ nǐ bù shuō, wǒ yě kàn de chūlái

Even if you don't say it, I can tell.

someone sitting silent with a set jaw while the person across quietly reads their face

  3. 就算, the spoken form

jiùsuàn xiànzài qù, yě láibují le

Even if we go now, it's already too late.

half rising from the chair, a glance at the clock, then sitting back down

  4. One customer, doors still open

jíshǐ zhǐ yǒu yí ge kèrén, diàn yě zhàoyàng kāi

Even with only one customer, the shop opens as usual.

lights switched on for a single guest in an empty shop and the sign turned around

  5. Harder still, hands stay on

zhè jiàn shì jíshǐ zài nán, wǒ yě bú huì fàngqì

However hard this gets, I won't give up.

a heavier box gripped again from a better angle and one more step taken

All of it in one picture

即使…也 is a foot that clears the stone. Drop heavy rain in the way and the departure time holds; say nothing and it still shows on your face. In speech the stone goes down as 就算; one customer is still enough to open the shop; and even the stone of 'it gets harder' doesn't make the hands let go.
