还

hái

The line that hasn't been cut yet: 还

The picture A line that should have ended, but keeps running a little further. 还 is the line still running, not yet cut; 再 is a fresh one laid down after the cut.

Connectors

Where the picture shows up in 还

  1. time still running

    他还在开会,您稍等。

tā hái zài kāi huì, nín shāo děng

He's still in the meeting; please hold on a moment.

The meeting-room door still shut, the wall clock's second hand still sweeping.

  2. one more on the line

    还有别的事吗?

hái yǒu bié de shì ma

    Is there anything else?

A finished list with one blank line still left under the last item.

  3. past the line

    今天比昨天还冷。

jīn tiān bǐ zuó tiān hái lěng

It's even colder today than yesterday.

A thermometer sitting one notch below the mark drawn for yesterday.

In comparisons 还 means 'further past that point'. It sounds softer than 更.

  4. barely on the line

    这家店的面还可以。

zhè jiā diàn de miàn hái kě yǐ

The noodles here are decent enough.

A needle that stops just barely above the pass line.

All of it in one picture

还 is one line running forward, not four separate words. The clock still sweeping is 'still'; the blank line under the list is 'one more'; dropping past yesterday's mark is 'even more'; stopping just over the pass line is 'good enough'. See the line that nobody cut and the four uses stop being four things to memorise.
