Draw one circle and erase everything outside it
The picture You draw a circle around one thing and erase everything outside it. 만 keeps one and erases the rest; 도 adds one more to what is already there — 물만 주세요 is water only, 물도 주세요 is water on top of your order.
Where the picture shows up in 만
-
the one inside the circle
저는 물만 주세요.
jeo-neun mul-man ju-se-yo
Just water for me, please.
Every drink on the menu is struck through except the one line that says water
-
a very small circle
잠깐만 기다려 주세요.
jam-kkan-man gi-da-ryeo ju-se-yo
One moment, please.
On a long ruler of time, a finger pins down a strip only two fingers wide
-
this one thing and you're done
여기에 서명만 하시면 돼요.
yeo-gi-e seo-myeong-man ha-si-myeon dwae-yo
You just need to sign here.
Every field on the form is already filled in; only the signature box is still blank
-
a circle around an empty stretch
삼 년 만에 고향에 갔어요.
sam nyeon ma-ne go-hyang-e ga-sseo-yo
I went home for the first time in three years.
Calendar pages turn for three years with nothing marked on them, and only at the end does the door of the family house open
삼 년에 is a point in time; 삼 년 만에 means three years went by empty and then, finally.
-
only the talk is left
그 사람은 말만 해요.
geu sa-ra-meun mal-man hae-yo
All he does is talk.
Speech bubbles keep coming out of his mouth while his hands and feet never move
All of it in one picture
만 draws a circle around one thing and erases everything outside it. Leave only the water line on the menu and every other drink is gone; pin down two fingers' width of the ruler and the long wait is gone. Leave only the signature box on the form and the rest of the work is gone; let three years of calendar turn blank and open the door only at the end, and that whole stretch was empty. Leave the speech bubbles and erase the hands and feet, and all he does is talk. So wherever 만 lands, the erased outside is part of the picture.
