Describing words

Where the picture shows up in 차갑다

  1. heat drained out of water

    물이 너무 차가워서 손이 시려요.

    mu-ri neo-mu cha-ga-wo-seo so-ni si-ryeo-yo

The water is so cold my hands sting.

You put your hands under the tap and heat drains straight out of your fingertips until they curl by themselves

  2. heat drained out on purpose

    차가운 물 한 잔 주세요.

    cha-ga-un mul han jan ju-se-yo

A glass of cold water, please.

A glass beaded with drops on the outside, and the cold water running down your throat taking the heat out of you

Here the cold is the welcome thing.

  3. heat missing from the extremities

    gyeo-u-re-neun son-ba-ri cha-ga-wo-yo

In winter my hands and feet are cold.

The body's heat stays around the chest and never reaches the fingertips and toes, so the ends are cooled through

  4. heat drained out of speech

    그 사람 말투가 너무 차가웠어요.

    geu sa-ram mal-tu-ga neo-mu cha-ga-wo-sseo-yo

That person's tone was so cold.

Short clipped words come out and cool the air until the listener pulls their shoulders in

  5. heat drained out of the listeners

    제안에 대한 반응이 차가웠습니다.

    je-a-ne dae-han ba-neung-i cha-ga-wot-seum-ni-da

The response to the proposal was cold.

You put the proposal out and everyone in the meeting room leans back saying nothing, and the air in the room cools

All of it in one picture

차갑다 is one picture: the heat has drained out. Out of water, and your hands sting; out of a drink, and it is exactly the cold glass you wanted. Out of the ends of the body, and hands and feet go cold; out of speech, and the tone is 차갑다. And when it has drained out of the listeners, the response is cold.
