换: the slot stays, what's in it changes
The picture One thing steps out of a slot and something else steps into the empty space. 变 is the thing itself becoming something else; 换 is taking it out and putting something else in its place.
Where the picture shows up in 换
-
swap one thing for another
This one's too small — could I exchange it?
You lay the small one on the counter and the bigger one comes back into its place.
-
swap money for money
wǒ xiǎng huàn diǎn rénmínbì
I'd like to change some money into RMB.
A stack of notes goes across the counter and a stack of yuan is set down where it was.
-
step out of one slot into another
xià ge yuè wǒ yào huàn gōngzuò
I'm switching jobs next month.
You clear out one desk, walk out, and turn up sitting at an empty desk in another building.
-
step off one train onto another
zài xià yí zhàn huàn dìtiě
Transfer to the subway at the next stop.
You step off the train you came on, cross the platform, and step onto another one.
-
put me in that slot
huàn le wǒ, wǒ yě bú qù
If it were me, I wouldn't have gone either.
You lift that person out of the spot they were standing in and stand yourself there instead.
换了我 means 'swap me into that position and see'.
All of it in one picture
换 is two things trading places around one slot. The small shirt leaves the counter and the big one takes its place; your notes go out and the yuan come in where they were. Empty this desk and you turn up at that one; step off this train and you're in a seat on the other. 换了我 is the same picture on a person: take him out of the spot he was standing in and put me there instead — so every 换 keeps that vacated slot being filled by something else.
