Why 'visit' and 'evidence' share one root

The picture Something hidden pulled out where the eyes can land on it, and a line of sight settling onto it. vis is what reaches the eyes; aud is what reaches the ears.

Word roots

Where the picture shows up in vis/vid

  1. Going to see with your own eyes

Please visit the clinic on Monday morning.

pliːz ˈvɪzɪt ðə ˈklɪnɪk ɒn ˈmʌndeɪ ˈmɔːrnɪŋ

Come into the clinic on Monday morning.

Walking through a door and standing the person right in front of your own eyes.

  2. Pulled onto a screen in front of you

Can you see me on the video call?

kæn juː siː miː ɒn ðə ˈvɪdioʊ kɔːl

Can you see me on the video call?

A face far away surfacing on a small screen, dragged close enough to look at.

  3. A trace the eye can check

There is no evidence of water damage.

ðɛr ɪz noʊ ˈɛvɪdəns əv ˈwɔːtər ˈdæmɪdʒ

There is no sign of a water leak.

A hidden stain pulled out into the open where everybody's eyes can land on it.

e- means out: what has been brought out to be seen is evidence.

  4. Watching from above

Ask your supervisor before you leave early.

æsk jʊr ˈsuːpərvaɪzər bɪˈfɔːr juː liːv ˈɜːrli

Tell your supervisor before you leave early.

One person looking down so the whole work floor fits inside their field of view.

super- means above — the one who sees from above supervises.

  5. Out in the open enough to catch the eye

The scratch is barely visible in this light.

ðə skrætʃ ɪz ˈbɛrli ˈvɪzəbl ɪn ðɪs laɪt

The scratch hardly shows in this light.

A thin scratch catching the light, right at the edge of what the eye can pick up.

All of it in one picture

vis and vid are one picture: a line of sight landing on something. Walk over and put a person in front of your eyes and you visit; pull a faraway face onto a screen in front of your eyes and it is video; drag a hidden mark out where everyone can see it and it is evidence. The one whose eyes sit above the whole floor is the supervisor, and a scratch your eye can only just catch is visible. So any word with vis or vid asks the same question: is it in front of the eyes?
