남다
nam-da
Rice is left, time is left, and words are left in you
The picture What is still sitting there after everything has been used up and everyone has gone. 남다 is what stays after everything has drained away; 모자라다 is what is missing before the thing is even full.
Where the picture shows up in 남다
-
still in the bowl after the meal
ba-bi jom na-ma-sseo-yo
There's some rice left.
Everyone has put down their spoons and there is still rice sitting in one corner of the bowl
-
time still there after the spending
si-ga-ni sip bun na-ma-sseo-yo
Ten minutes left.
Almost all the sand has run through, and a handful still holds in the top of the glass
-
still in place after everyone has gone
jeo hon-ja sa-mu-si-re na-ma-sseo-yo
I stayed behind alone in the office.
A dark office with a single desk lamp still burning over my seat
-
still in the heart after the moment passed
geu ma-ri a-jik-do ma-eu-me na-ma-yo
Those words still stay with me.
A sentence spoken long ago still lodged inside the chest
-
the share left in your hand after spending
i-beon da-reun nam-neun ge eom-ne-yo
There's nothing left over this month.
The pay envelope shaken upside down and nothing falling out of it
All of it in one picture
남다 is the picture of what holds its place after everything else has drained away. The meal is over and the rice is still in the bowl; the sand has nearly run through and a handful still holds; everyone has gone and my lamp is still on; the moment has passed and the sentence is still in my chest; the money is spent and the envelope has nothing to drop. So wherever 남다 goes, a current has flowed out and one thing stayed exactly where it was.
