Connectors

Where the picture shows up in 又…又

  1. cheap label plus tasty label

    这家店又便宜又好吃。

zhè jiā diàn yòu pián yi yòu hǎo chī

This place is cheap and the food is good.

Two signs taped side by side on the shop's glass door: 'cheap' and 'delicious'.

  2. tired label plus hungry label

    他又累又饿。

    tā yòu lèi yòu è

    He's tired and hungry.

One person with shoulders sagging and a hand pressed to their stomach.

  3. two downsides layered

    这个房子又小又贵。

zhè ge fáng zi yòu xiǎo yòu guì

This flat is small and expensive on top of that.

A big price tag hanging in the middle of a room so small you touch the wall when you turn.

又…又 isn't only for praise; two flaws stack just as easily.

  4. two skills layered

    她又会做饭又会修车。

tā yòu huì zuò fàn yòu huì xiū chē

She can cook and she can fix a car.

Someone standing with a ladle in one hand and a wrench in the other.

All of it in one picture

又…又 is overlap, never sequence. Two signs on one door is 'cheap and tasty'; sagging shoulders and a hand on the stomach on one body is 'tired and hungry'. A big price tag inside a tiny room is two downsides layered on one flat, and a ladle plus a wrench is two skills layered on one person. Whichever way it goes, both labels land on the same single body.
