   flipping a feeling, calmly

   오늘은 별로 춥지 않아요.

   o-neu-reun byeol-lo chup-ji a-na-yo

   It's not that cold today.

   With adjectives, 춥지 않다 often sits better than 안 춥다.

2. 2

   drawing a line, formally

   저는 술을 마시지 않습니다.

   jeo-neun su-reul ma-si-ji an-seum-ni-da

   I don't drink.

   With -습니다 it's firm without being rude.

   measuring against expectation

   생각보다 어렵지 않아요.

   saeng-gak-bo-da eo-ryeop-ji a-na-yo

   It's not as hard as you'd think.

   when an object won't cooperate

   문이 열리지 않아요.

   mu-ni yeol-li-ji a-na-yo

   The door won't open.

   Objects have no will, so this ending fits them better than 안.

5. 5

   checking by asking backwards

   우리 만난 적 있지 않아요?

   u-ri man-nan jeok it-ji a-na-yo

   Haven't we met before?

   Asking in the negative actually invites a 'yes'.
