deo-ra-go-yo
I went, I saw, here it is: -더라고요
The picture Coming back from somewhere and laying the scene you saw out in front of the listener. -더라고요 lays out what your own eyes saw; -대요 passes along what someone else told you.
Where the picture shows up in -더라고요
-
the closed door you went to
ga bo-ni-kka mu-ni da-chyeot-deo-ra-go-yo
I went over and the place was closed.
Having walked all the way there, seen the shut door and the lowered shutter, and come back to say so
-
what your body learned by taking it
geu ya-geul meo-geu-ni-kka jom nat-deo-ra-go-yo
I took that medicine and it helped a bit.
Hours after the pill, feeling your own body go lighter, and only then reporting it
-
the road you sat in
a-chi-me-neun gi-ri ma-ni ma-ki-deo-ra-go-yo
The traffic was bad in the morning.
Pulling out the memory of standing in that morning road yourself, cars not moving
-
the workload you walked into
saeng-gak-bo-da i-ri man-deo-ra-go-yo
There was more work than I expected.
Sitting at the desk, counting the stacked files with your own hands, then coming back to report
-
the difficulty your hands found
jik-jeop hae bo-ni-kka eo-ryeop-deo-ra-go-yo
I tried it myself and it's hard.
It looked easy while someone else did it; the weight is only known once your own hands take hold
Do not use -더라고요 for someone else's experience. It attaches only to what you went through.
All of it in one picture
-더라고요 is a stamp saying you were there. Walk to the door and it becomes 닫혔더라고요; take the medicine and it becomes 낫더라고요; sit in the morning traffic and it becomes 막히더라고요. Count the files yourself and it becomes 많더라고요; take hold with your own hands and it becomes 어렵더라고요. That is why the word always carries the weight of 'I saw it myself'.
