gussuri
The body sinking to the floor of sleep: ぐっすり
The picture A body sunk as far down into the bedding as it goes, lying motionless at a depth outside sounds cannot reach. ぐっすり is sunk to the floor and deeply asleep; うとうと is dozing on the surface, drifting in and out.
Where the picture shows up in ぐっすり
-
slept soundly
kinou wa gussuri nemurimashita
I slept really well last night.
Waking up to find the bedding still shaped exactly as you lay down in it, not once turned over
-
a child far under
kodomo wa mou gussuri nete imasu
The child is already fast asleep.
A child in the bedding with mouth slightly open, only the shoulders rising and falling slowly
-
sleep the medicine gave
kusuri o nondara, gussuri nemuremashita
I took the medicine and managed to sleep soundly.
A pill packet and glass of water by the pillow while the body settles down into it
-
a depth sound can't reach
denwa ga natte mo, gussuri nete ite kizukimasen deshita
The phone rang but I was sound asleep and didn't notice.
Only the phone screen flashing bright at the bedside while the body does not stir at all
Here the depth is shown as how far a sound can get.
-
offering that depth
kon'ya wa gussuri yasunde kudasai
Get a good rest tonight.
Raising a hand to see a colleague off at the door, then tilting a palm against your own cheek like a pillow
A parting line for someone ill or worn out.
All of it in one picture
Watch the sunken body and all five line up. Having gone that deep last night means you slept well; a child already down there is hard to wake. Medicine lowering you to that depth is sleep you finally got, and a phone ringing that cannot reach it is a call you never heard. Offering someone that depth becomes "get a good rest tonight".
