팔다

pal-da

Selling umbrellas, selling your own attention

The picture What was in your hands crosses into someone else's, and a price lands where it used to be. 팔다 is taking payment and handing it to their side; 사다 is paying to pull it to yours.

Core verbs

Where the picture shows up in 팔다

  1. goods cross to the customer

    yeo-gi u-san-do pa-ra-yo

Do you sell umbrellas here too?

An umbrella is lifted off the rack into a customer's hand, and coins land where it stood

  2. every last one crosses over

    geu mo-de-reun eo-je da pal-lyeo-sseo-yo

    That model sold out yesterday.

A shelf that was full stands empty a day later, with only a sold-out slip taped to the gap

  3. handing over something big for money

    geu-pae-seo cha-reul ssa-ge pa-ra-sseo-yo

I needed the money, so I sold the car cheap.

Keys are pressed into another hand and your car pulls out of the alley as someone else's

  4. handing over your name for gain

    je i-reum pal-go da-ni-ji ma-se-yo

Stop going around using my name.

Someone holds out a card with your name on it as if it were theirs and walks in through the door

What crosses over is not an object but a name — hence 'selling' your name.

  5. handing your attention elsewhere

    ttan de jeong-sin pal-ji mal-go i-ra-se-yo

Stop letting your mind wander and get to work.

The hands still hold the paperwork while the eyes and the mind have crossed out of the window

All of it in one picture

팔다 is one picture: what is on your side crosses over to theirs. An umbrella crosses into a customer's hand and that is trade; the shelf empties and the whole batch has crossed over; keys land in another hand and the car is no longer yours. Let someone hold your name and use it and your name is being sold; let your eyes and mind cross out the window and your attention is sold off. So once 팔다 lands, what was on your side is no longer yours.
