All of it in one picture
乗る is one picture: getting on top of something. Put your feet on the bus floor and you board; climb onto the train they point out and you take that one; stand on the plate of a scale and you are stepping up; set a box on a stand and it is sitting on it; climb onto the talk someone has laid out and you are hearing them out. The particle is ~に — it marks what you are on top of.
