发

fā

One character sends a text, a fever, and a temper: 发

The picture Something that was shut inside bursts outward in every direction. 收 gathers what was spread outside back in; 发 sends what was inside spreading outward.

Core verbs

Where the picture shows up in 发

  1. push it out of your hands

    我给你发个微信。

wǒ gěi nǐ fā ge wēixìn

I'll send it to you on WeChat.

The message leaves your fingertips, shoots off the screen and out to the other side.

  2. hand it out to everyone

    工资每月十号发。

gōngzī měi yuè shí hào fā

Payday is the 10th of every month.

A stack of envelopes in one place splits up and scatters into everyone's hands.

  3. heat pushing out of the body

    我有点发烧。

    wǒ yǒudiǎn fā shāo

    I've got a bit of a fever.

You put a hand to your forehead and the heat inside pushes up into your palm.

  4. fire bursting out of a person

    他一下子就发火了。

tā yíxiàzi jiù fā huǒ le

He suddenly blew up at us.

What was held down inside comes up all at once, out through the voice.

  5. swelling outward

    面还没发好。

    miàn hái méi fā hǎo

    The dough hasn't risen yet.

The dough in the bowl swells slowly until it climbs over the rim.

All of it in one picture

发 is what was shut inside breaking out. The message leaves your fingertips and travels outward; the stack of pay envelopes splits up into many hands. Heat pushes out through the skin, and anger held down inside comes out all at once through the voice. Even dough rising over the rim of the bowl is the same picture, which is why anything with 发 carries something inside spreading out into the open.
