座

zuò

The counter for things rooted to the ground: 座

The picture A heavy mass settled onto a base on the ground, refusing to budge when you push it. 座 counts a big mass fixed to its base; 台 counts one machine that sits on a stand and runs.

Counting words

Where the picture shows up in 座

  1. a building risen out of the ground

    那座楼是我们公司。

nà zuò lóu shì wǒmen gōngsī

    That building is our company.

Looking up at a block that rises straight out of the ground across the street.

The whole building is 座; a room inside it is 间.

  2. something standing on two banks

    市里新建了一座桥。

shì lǐ xīn jiàn le yí zuò qiáo

The city built a new bridge.

A bridge with a foot planted on each bank of the river.

  3. a mass nature set down

    村子后面有一座山。

cūnzi hòumiàn yǒu yí zuò shān

There is a mountain behind the village.

One mountain standing unmoved beyond the village rooftops.

  4. a figure up on a plinth

    广场上有一座雕像。

guǎngchǎng shang yǒu yí zuò diāoxiàng

There is a statue in the square.

A statue standing on a square stone base in the middle of the plaza.

  5. a heavy thing set on the floor

    客厅里摆着一座老钟。

kètīng lǐ bǎi zhe yí zuò lǎo zhōng

There is an old clock in the living room.

A tall pendulum clock standing directly on the living-room floor.

    A wristwatch or desk clock takes 只 or 个; a floor-standing clock takes 座.

All of it in one picture

The block rising across the street is 座, the bridge planted on both banks is 座, the mountain standing behind the village is 座. The statue up on its stone plinth is 座, and so is the tall clock set straight onto the living-room floor. 座 is not counting size; it is counting 'fixed to the ground and not moving'. That is why nothing counted with 座 can be pictured being carried away.
