Footsteps that took the long way on purpose
The picture Footprints that ignored the straight road and looped the long way round to reach this door. わざわざ makes a special trip; ついでに drops in while passing anyway.
Where the picture shows up in わざわざ
-
came the long way for you
wa-za-wa-za ki-te i-ta-da-i-te, a-ri-ga-tou go-za-i-ma-su
Thank you for coming all this way.
A deep bow to the visitor standing at the door in rain-soaked shoes
Its most common home is in thanks.
-
someone spent effort on you
wa-za-wa-za su-mi-ma-sen. ta-su-ka-ri-ma-shi-ta
I'm sorry you went to the trouble. It really helped.
Receiving with both hands the thing you left behind, apology written on your face
Gratitude and apology arrive in the same breath.
-
no need to go that far
wa-za-wa-za ka-wa-na-ku-te mo ii de-su yo
You really don't have to go out and buy anything.
A flat palm raised gently to stop the hand holding a gift bag
It lifts the trouble off the other person in advance.
-
did you come all this way just for that
wa-za-wa-za mon-ku o i-i ni ki-ta n de-su ka
Did you come all the way here just to complain?
Someone who travelled far standing without even setting their bag down, voice rising
It also carries sarcasm or resentment.
-
I set aside effort of my own
wa-za-wa-za ya-su-mi o to-tte, byou-in ni i-ki-ma-shi-ta
I took a day off specially and went to the hospital.
One square of the shift chart rubbed out and the clinic's name written in its place
It shows that time was carved out on purpose.
All of it in one picture
わざわざ is a footstep that took the long way on purpose. When those steps reach your door, it becomes "thank you for coming all this way"; when they carry something you forgot, gratitude comes mixed with apology. Block that road in advance and it becomes "you really needn't", load it with complaints and it becomes "you came all this way just for that?", and carve a day out of your own shift and it becomes "specially". It does not measure distance — it points at effort spent apart from everything else.
