What this deck covers

Ten slides with two body sections. As the cover line says, it runs from stating the research problem to trend analysis in ten slides, which suits a 15-20 minute proposal or mid-stage defence: research question, design, preliminary results. For a final defence covering every chapter, duplicate the slide 3-6 divider-and-body sets once per chapter. The decorative labels on the cover (a dot-matrix note and a focus coordinate) can be replaced with your department or defence date.

Mapping the ten slides

  1. Cover: keep the title to two lines; advisor, department and defence date go on the line that currently holds the year and presenter name.
  2. Agenda: five items – research problem, research design, review comments and revisions, key metrics, trend analysis. If you need six, add a box and fix the 01-05 numbers.
  3. Slides 3-4, section 01: subtitled “convince them in one slide why this topic matters”, with three lines on the gap prior work missed, two research questions and four hypotheses, and the stated limits of a thesis-scope study. Each line carries an “01/03” progress tag that must move with it if you reorder.
  4. Slides 5-6, section 02: subtitled so the committee can verify your sample and instruments, shipping with a stratified random sample of 384, questionnaire reliability of alpha 0.87, and data collected March to September 2024.
  5. Slide 7 puts three first-round review comments (sample too small, variable definitions vague, prior-work review shallow) against three revisions (sample expanded from 120 to 340, operational definition table added, 28 papers from the last five years added).
  6. Slides 8-9: four metric cards and four bars.
  7. Closing slide: only a line about reflecting the committee’s comments plus a thank-you. Replace the thank-you with your one-sentence conclusion so it stays up during questions.

Numbers for slides 8 and 9

  • The cards read 384 analyzed sample, 0.61 explained variance R squared, 3 hypotheses accepted, and a 20-minute presentation slot. Swap the first three for your own values and set the last to your actual slot.
  • The bars are stages of review – preliminary 38, revision 62, main defence 84, final 97 – showing progress rather than results. To use them for a treatment-versus-control comparison, relabel the axis and add a caption; there is no unit caption on this slide.
  • The sample size appears three times: 384 on slides 6 and 8, but 340 in the revision column on slide 7. Reconcile all three or the committee will catch it first.

The cards are sized for short strings, so keep counts as integers and ratios or coefficients to two decimals. In a 15-minute talk, allow 6 minutes for slides 3-6 and 5 for slides 7-9, splitting the rest across cover, agenda and closing.

What causes trouble in the room

  • Pasting a full regression table – there is no table slide, so it lands on the metric cards at 8pt. Keep details in an appendix and speak to two or three coefficients.
  • Using the dividers as chapter summaries; slides 3 and 5 hold only a section label, a number and a title.
  • Filling slide 7 with comments you have not received yet. Before the first review, use the left column for the limits of prior work and the right for how your study answers them.
  • Updating figures in the deck but not in the manuscript – the first thing a committee catches. Check sample size and reliability against the manuscript right before you present.
