About this template

The ten slides you send before the meeting

Ten slides with two body sections: cover, agenda, two divider-and-body pairs (round overview, use of funds), a slide setting round terms against use of funds, four metric cards, a trend slide and a closing page. It is the length that gets attached to a first warm-intro email. The defaults already state a KRW 3bn bridge round at a KRW 32bn pre-money on convertible preferred, so this is a deck that leads with terms. Product detail and team belong in a separate appendix.

Terms and use of funds only

Slide 4 takes amount, valuation and instrument; slide 6 splits the proceeds. The defaults – 48% R&D payroll, 22% overseas certification, 18% initial inventory – add to 88%, so footnote the remaining 12% or regroup the three lines to 100%. An allocation that does not add up is the first question in the meeting.

The agenda has five lines: round overview, use of funds, terms against the funding plan, key metrics, trend analysis. The first two each get a divider-and-body pair (slides 3 to 6) and the last three are the comparison slide 7, the metric cards on slide 8 and the trend slide 9, so every agenda line has a screen and the agenda itself needs no editing. What the file has no room for is the material a summary deck is usually asked for next: the existing shareholder list, the closing date and a named contact. Move the closing date and contact onto slide 10 and put shareholders beside the metric cards.

The four cards are the real filter

Investors decide on slide 8. The defaults are a KRW 3bn raise, a KRW 32bn pre-money, 92% year-on-year growth and four following shareholders; back each with its arithmetic.

  • Say whether the KRW 3bn is the whole round or this closing.
  • Give the post-money and the new-share ratio next to the pre-money.
  • Caption what the 92% measures and over which period.
  • Distinguish existing investors re-upping from new commitments.

The funnel bars and the closing line

Slide 9 narrows from 68 contacts to 42 meetings, 18 diligences and 11 commitments. It shows round progress rather than growth, so date it in the caption – the numbers move weekly. Eleven commitments and four following shareholders mean different things, so reconcile them or label the difference. The bars are shapes, so rescale as value / largest value. Put the closing date and a named contact on the final slide, or the reader has nothing to reply to.

Why replies stop

  • A use-of-funds split that adds to 88% reads as concealment.
  • Editing slide 7 apart from slides 4 and 8. The same terms are repeated in three places: the left column of slide 7 carries the KRW 3bn raise, the KRW 32bn pre-money and the convertible preferred issue, and its right column repeats the 48 / 22 / 18 percent split from slide 6. Change one place only and the deck disagrees with itself, so update slides 4, 6, 7 and 8 together before you send it.
  • Undefined growth figures, which double or halve depending on the base period and get re-asked in diligence.
  • Inflating the funnel; 68 contacts is easy to check when someone asks for the list.
